REFLECTIONS OF AN AUTHOR

NAVIGATING THE CREATIVE WATERS

My journey into writing began as a way to process my experiences. I share untold stories of those engaged in maritime conflict. For me, as for many writers, storytelling is a calling. We cannot help but write; our stories urge us to record them. Our characters demand their stories be told.

INCITING INCIDENTS AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Each story is a reflection of the challenges and triumphs faced by those who serve at sea. I often start with an inciting incident or a historical event that captures my interest. For instance, my concerns about naval conflict with China coupled with a desire to develop a main character who is a destroyer captain led to my first published novel. The foundational idea allows me to outline a general narrative arc while remaining open to where the story takes me.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

My journey into writing began as a way to express untold stories inspired by my nautical experiences. Initially, I kept my identity as a writer a secret, missing opportunities to share my narratives. Each book reflects the challenges and triumphs faced by those who serve at sea, illuminating the complexities of the human experience amid conflict. I encourage fellow writers to embrace their calling as we craft narratives that intertwine authenticity, historical insights, and the hope that follows even the darkest storms.

AUTHENTICITY IN SETTING AND EVENTS

In my novels, I emphasize authenticity in setting and events, ensuring that readers experience what it’s truly like aboard a destroyer or amid significant historical moments. When characters walk into the Combat Information Center, I bring the environment to life with realistic commands, radio signals, and sensory details that make the scene palpable. I also strive to capture the mannerisms, language, and perspectives of historical figures through thorough research, creating vivid and accurate portrayals of their experiences.
